Our central philosophy is that hatred and violence are born out of ignorance, and it is therefore the responsibility of the educational community to expose students to the world's invisible and vulnerable communities. Day of Dialogue seeks to connect queer identity to core-curricular subjects and provide queer students a chance to see themselves in their schoolwork, as well as exposing their non-queer classmates to the LGBTQ+ community in a way that they may have never experienced before.
The ideal model for the Day of Dialogue is a week-long experience. At Gilman, teachers give a 20-30 minute subject-relevant Day of Dialogue lesson to each of their classes over the course of a week. The knowledge imparted in class is compounded with a speaker experience followed by discussion. The week ends with a celebration for the school community.
